Position Scope

NACG is in the process of building a telematics system to monitor health and production data on our diverse fleet of 600+ pieces of heavy equipment at various contract sites throughout North America. Reporting directly to the Superintendent of Reliability, this position will act as field support to install, troubleshoot and maintain the hardware required to run this telematics system. The technician will support NACG’s telematics implementation project by planning, documenting and completing radio and datalogger installs on rigid-frame haul trucks, hydraulic mining shovels, graders, dozers and support equipment in the field. The technician will work closely with the CBM project lead and telematics implementation coordinator to perform “factory quality” telematics system installs across the fleet. They will work closely with the NACG office staff, dealer and OEM on the hardware and installs to continuously improve the system.


The technician will become a subject matter expert on NACG’s selected telematics system hardware and act as the primary troubleshooting and repair tech for the fleet. They will support NACG’s various contract sites, primarily in the Alberta Oil sands with some travel to NACG’s Acheson Rebuild Facility and various contract sites.


The technician will work with supervision on the various sites and back-office coordinators to coordinate installs and repairs on the fleet. They will travel from site to site, primarily in the oilsands, to perform installs and troubleshooting as required. The technician will primarily operate from a truck with a workspace and storage body with support from NACG’s Oilsands shops and warehouses. The technician will also assist with managing connectivity of the devices (primarily through LTE) and tasked with resolving connectivity issues as they arise through the use of boosters, improved antennas, etc.


Perform Installs of Telematics Systems on the Heavy Equipment Fleet

  • Install modems, dataloggers, harnesses and antennas on a variety of heavy equipment types
  • Perform field and shop installs of the telematics systems
  • Work with NACG office staff, dealer contacts and OEM support to plan installs and provide feedback on proposed mounting, routing, hardware and configuration procedures.
  • Maintain access to various oilsands sites, obtain work permits and work with site supervision to perform installs
  • Work with NACG parts technicians and warehouse staff to maintain a stock of install parts

Troubleshoot and Maintain Field Telematics Hardware

  • Diagnose and repair CANBUS data connectivity issues and software configuration issues
  • Troubleshoot physical connectivity issues and make repairs to harnesses, antennas, modems and dataloggers
  • Troubleshoot RF connectivity issues and make recommendations for improvements to signal quality. Repair modem/antenna issues and implement connectivity improvement projects as required.
  • Maintain a stock of repair parts, with support from NACG warehouse and parts techs

 Assist with Install Planning and Documentation

  • Provide detailed install notes with pictures to NACG back-office staff.
  • Support the development of install procedures with pictures, notes and mounting/routing locations to the project lead
  • Provide feedback and suggestions to the project lead, dealer and OEM to continuously improve install plans

 Assist with Maintenance of NACG’s Existing RF Systems

  • Assist NACG IT with repairs to on-site RF equipment as required
  • Troubleshoot 2-way radios and make repairs as necessary


  • Certified Instrumentation Technician is preferable
  • Certified RF technician or Heavy Equipment Technicians would be considered
  • CANBUS, Instrumentation and RF training is considered an asset
  • Training on Caterpillar product link device installation and troubleshooting is considered an asset
  • 2 years of field experience with sensor networks, datalogging devices or heavy equipment maintenance
  • RF install, repair and troubleshooting experience is considered an asset
  • Telematics or radio equipment install experience is considered an asset
  • Experience with documentation of work processes
  • Experience working on various sites and managing proper training, permits and certification requirements.
  • Experience working in a green field operation and adapting to the surroundings.
  • Experience in the Heavy Construction & Mining industry is considered an asset.
  • Equipment operation or maintenance experience is considered an asset.
  • Heavy equipment remote reporting system (VIMS, VisionLink, JDLink, ZXLink, GolbalE, Komtrax, Komatsu VHMS, etc.) experience is an asset.
  • Basic reading, writing, and arithmetic skills required.
  • Excellent computer skills with ability to troubleshoot and configure telematics setup softwares. Note: Training will be provided for proprietary configuration softwares.
  • Ability to identify and resolve computer system malfunctions and operational problems.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to learn and support new systems and applications.
  • Ability to work in the field in all environments.
  • Strong drive to deliver high quality work under operational deadlines and constraints
  • Ability to self-manage with various coordination and planning abilities
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong drive to maintain safety as number one priority in all tasks
  • Valid Class 5 License
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs


  1. Be proficient in English, both verbally and written
  2. Have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  3. Have experience as requested as mentioned above
  4. Subject to Random Testing at: Suncor, Suncor Fort Hills and Kearl sites
  5. Disclose COVID-19 vaccination status:

    • Individuals not fully immunized may be subject to site COVID-19 testing requirements and associated costs
  6. Undergo and successfully pass the following testing:
    • Breath Alcohol Test

    • Fitness-to-Work Assessment
    • Audiometric Testing
    • Vision Screening
